Abbreviated Information:
Dilateria is a by-product of Laminaria Japonica, a seaweed that grows in the waters of northern Asia. The stipe, or stem, is dried, sized, and subsequently hand-processed to assure a proper rounding of the tip and a more uniform diameter. A string is attached for ease in location, and a button is placed on the end to control migration further into the cervical canal. Dilateria is individually packaged.
Indications:
Dilateria should be considered whenever cervical dilation and/or softening of the cervix is desired.
- Cervical stenosis
- Related to dysmenorrhea
- Considered a possible cause of infertility
- Resulting from cauterization or conization
- Prior to colposcopy to provide clearer view of squamocolumnar junction
- Prior to hysteroscopy
- Prior to endometrial curettage
- Suction cannula aspiration
- Endometrial biopsy
- Induction of labor
- Fetal demise
- Radium placement
Advantages:
Gradual symmetrical dilation.
- Reduces instances of cervical tears
- Minimizes patient discomfort
- Less risk of causing false passage
Limitations:
- Dilateria begins expanding slowly but immediately. The maximum dilation occurs within 6 to 8 hours. In cases where only partial dilation is necessary, the Dilateria can sometimes be removed in 45 minutes to 1 hour, but under no circumstances should Dilateria be left in place for more than 24 hours.
- Patient must return for removal of Dilateria.
Contraindication:
- Should not be used in presence of vaginal, cervical, or pelvic infections
- Non-compliant patient
Packed:
- Dilateria
- 3 sterile gauze pads
- Patient Consent Form
- Instructions for insertion and removal
- Comprehensive information included with each order
Laminaria is a sea-grown plant that may have residual spores present even after processing with the most advanced Ethylene Oxide procedures.
WARNING ! One-time use only. Product becomes brittle if reused and may break.
