Abbreviated information:
Fine needle aspiration biopsy is a simple, cost-effective, safe office procedure for the evaluation of all palpable breast masses.
Purpose:
Cytologic evaluation of breast nodules and cysts
Differentiation of breast lesions
Indications:
Any lesion of the breast which can be palpated should be aspirated to help:
- Establish a diagnosis
- Assist in determining extent of disease
- Evacuate a cyst
- Distinguish between diffuse suppurative mastitis and carcinoma with associated severe inflammation
- Confirm diagnois of inoperable carcinoma of the breast prior to radiotherapy
Advantages:
- High degree of accuracy
- Less traumatic
- Well tolerated by the patient
- Rapid diagnostic tool
- Beveled needle and side port help ensure adequate sampling of typical breast mass
- Stylet assures ease of insertion into mass or cyst without picking up material from outside of the mass
- Reduces need for hospitalization and saves OR time and expense
- Useful adjunct to diagnosis of malignant disease
- Useful for following patients with chronic cystic mastopathy
- Clear hub of needle enables you to observe removal of specimen
- Especially useful with pregnant patients when mammography is contraindicated
Limitations:
- A benign fine needle aspiration cannot be sole basis for diagnosis of breast pathology. If clinical and/or laboratory evidence suggests a malignancy, additional test procedures are indicated regardless of benign cytologic diagnosis.
- The size or depth of a lesion may be limiting factor without radiographic guidance.
