Abbreviated Information:
Nylon redesigned endocervical curette for obtaining histologic tissue samples from the endocervical canal for early detection of endocervical carcinoma.
Indications:
- Abnormal cervical cytology
- High risk for cervical cancer
- Young age at first coitus
- Multiple sexual partners
- Young age at first pregnancy
- History of papilloma virus particularly in a smoker
- Post colposcopy
- Prior to laser treatment for CIN to ensure lesion is solely endocervical and not invasive cancer
Advantages of Milex ECC vs. Metal Curette:1
- Less painful
- Does not compromise quality or quantity of tissue sample
- Less bleeding
- Improved patient compliance
- Metal instruments dull with usage, increasing pain to patient and excessive bleeding
- Syringe holds specimen in narrow lumen of curette, reducing the deterioration of the specimen and time spent locating tissue sample in the vaginal vault.
Limitations:
- For diagnosis of endocervical pathology only
- Preferable not to do ECC immediately preceding a cone biopsy (may prevent an accurate assessment of the cone-tipped margin2)
Contraindications:
Pregnancy - The presence of any vaginal, cervical, and/or pelvic infection(s). Infections must be treated prior to any endocervical curettage or biopsy.
